GHANA SETS FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN DECEMBER

President John Dramani Mahama, who stepped into the leadership role following the recent death of John Atta-Mills, to run in this year's presidential election in December.
George Lawson of the National Democratic Congress party said Thursday that Mahama, a communications expert, will face National Patriotic Party candidate Nana Akufo-Addo, who lost to Mills in 2004 by less than 1 percent.
Mahama, who had been vice-president, was sworn into office the night of President Mills' death in July in what analysts hailed as a smooth transition in a coup-prone region.

98-YEAR-OLD MESSAGE IN BOTTLE SETS WORLD RECORD

A message in a bottle has been pulled from the ocean 98 years after it was written, and officials say it is the world's oldest of its kind.

Scottish fisherman Andrew Leaper found the letter in his nets while sailing off of Scotland's northern coast. And on Thursday, Guinness World Records confirmed that is the old message in a bottle ever found, beating the previous record holder by five years.

Amazingly, the previous record holder was found by the same boat.

In 1914, Scottish Captain C.H. Brown of the Glasgow School of Navigation released 1,890 bottles as part of a government experiment to map the undercurrents of the seas around Scotland. Each bottle contained a postcard asking the finder to record details of where the bottle was located. The letter also promises a reward of sixpence, which the AP notes no longer exists.

Amadi Ogbonna, Entertainment editor of Vanguard Newspapers is dead. News of the journalist’s death broke on yesterday evening. Sources said he died after asthma attack. The attack started in the office and he was rushed to the hospital in Apapa, he died shortly after.

PDP SETS UP COMMITTEE FOR ONDO STATE ELECTION

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has announced the inauguration of a seven person committee for the Ondo State governorship election coming up soon
Speaking in Abuja, Tukur said: "PDP has gathered to rub minds on how to tackle the challenge the party will likely face during the governorship election in Ondo State."
